Study of rest in Spanish islands

IKEA Baleares and Canary Islands has released the results of its recent study on rest in the Spanish islands. This analysis seeks to explore how consumers perceive and experience six essential factors for a good night's sleep: comfort, temperature, ventilation, order, noise and lighting.

A young sleeping with a happy face

Rest is essential for our health and well-being. Getting a good night's sleep not only helps regenerate the body and mind, but also provides us with the energy and mental clarity we need to face the day. This study analyses how IKEA followers value key aspects that influence the quality of their sleep, from comfort to temperature, ventilation, order, noise and lighting.

These are the results, by percentage of respondents, who have given the highest rating for each of the elements:

Results of the sleep study
Comfort 79.76%
Temperature and ventilation 72.80%
Order 71.70%
Noise 66.94%
Lighting 45.88%

Comfort, which includes mattresses, pillows and textiles, stands out as the key factor for a good night's sleep, with 79.76% of respondents giving it the highest rating. Having a suitable mattress and a pillow that adapts to personal needs is essential to avoid muscle tension and ensure a restful sleep. In addition, the results reveal that, as people age, the importance of this aspect increases. For those over 55, comfort reaches 86.34%, reflecting how our sleep needs change with age.

Mattress firmness is another key aspect: 77.66% of respondents prefer medium firmness, although younger people tend to opt for softer mattresses. Among those over 55, extra firmness is the second most popular option. Comfort remains the priority when choosing a mattress, with 74.75% highlighting it as the most important criterion, followed by the choice of quality materials, especially valued by older people.

The mattress topper is an accessory that improves comfort, prolongs the life of the mattress, regulates temperature and adds an extra layer of softness. Although only 20% of respondents use it, it is a versatile and effective solution to personalize rest.

The pillow is essential to improve comfort in the bedroom. Its main function is to align the head, neck and spine during sleep. The height and design of the pillow can make it more or less suitable for different postures or needs. When asked about their preferred pillow type, respondents answered:

Pillow preference according to respondents
High pillow 30.22%
Low pillow 34.62%
Ergonomic pillow 35.16%

Temperature and ventilation are the second most important factor for rest, according to 72.80% of respondents. People over 55 are more sensitive to air quality, with 85% highlighting the importance of good ventilation, while younger people do not seem to consider it as relevant. As for the ideal bedroom temperature, 57% prefer a cool environment to rest better.

Order in the bedroom is an important aspect, with 71.70% of respondents recognizing its relevance for proper rest. An organized space not only promotes relaxation, but also reduces anxiety, a key factor in disconnecting and falling asleep.

Finally, although noise is considered disruptive, opinions vary between generations. Younger people are more tolerant, with only 56% mentioning noise as a problem, while among older people, sensitivity reaches 78.69%. Although lighting is less valued, it is still important to regulate circadian rhythms and facilitate relaxation.

Ultimately, the quality of sleep depends on various factors, and establishing an optimal rest environment is essential to ensure comprehensive well-being.
