At IKEA, we're committed to sustainability and caring for the environment. That's why by 2030 all materials used by IKEA will be renewable or recycled. What do you think?
KNIXHULT is a perfect example of how furniture design can have minimal environmental impact. It's our range of handcrafted bamboo lamps. Want to know more about it? We'll tell you all about its features. Let's get started!

Forward looking ideas

When talking about futuristic designs, bamboo may not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, here's why it's such a special material.
Bamboo is one of the fastest growing and self-regenerating raw materials. That makes it a less aggressive option for nature and perfect for our products.
When we designed the KNIXHULT lamp, we actually used parts of the bamboo that are usually discarded. In this way, we get the most out of this raw material.
For the creation of this series we have a team of true professionals. Do you recognize any of the women in the photo? That's Anna Granath (left), product developer in our IKEA lighting team, working with award-winning sustainability designer Emma Olbers.

“We wanted to make a product with the least amount of carbon. Bamboo actually offsets emissions because it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it grows.”

Emma Olbers, sustainability designer.

New traditional craftsmanship

The IKEA team traveled to Vietnam to explore the bamboo supply chain and work side by side with local master craftsmen, where everyone was able to learn something.
Anna explains that by working with the raw material and letting it show its natural expression, we were able to get much more out of it. While previously only 18% of the bamboo was used, KNIXHULT raises that figure to 65%.

“To me, making good design means being able to look your children in the eye, knowing that you've made something that will help preserve this world for them.”

Anna Granath, IKEA Product Developer

Take home a sustainable icon

KNIXHULT is not only a more sustainable option, but as far as interior decoration is concerned, it is also a unique and singular product.
Each lamp is unique because the bamboo has natural color variations and has been braided by a skilled craftsman. The result? A lamp with soul that provides soft, glowing illumination, something that will give your home a warm and cozy ambiance.

“The variations of these materials remind us of human beings. We all look different and that same beauty is present in the variations of bamboo.”

Emma Olbers, sustainability designer

This series hits stores in different models, including a ceiling lamp and a floor lamp. But for it to truly live up to its title of “sustainable icon,” one more detail was missing. Not only does the packaging of these products contain no plastic, but the lamps themselves will not end up in a landfill. When their life cycle comes to an end, their parts are easy to separate and recycle for energy recovery.
