Saint Lucia, the Swedish festival of light

The celebration of Saint Lucia is one of the most typical and popular in the Swedish culture. Lucia is an ancestral character and has the function of bringing light to the dark Swedish winter. Therefore, every December 13th (St. Lucy's Day), girls are dressed as "Lucia" with their crowns of candles and everyone sings traditional songs of this celebration. Also, families prepare cakes and ginger cookies that they have with coffee or Christmas punch.
